VETERANS EXCHANGE
V-E Day, or Veterans Exchange Day, is held at 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at the Manistee Senior Center.
It was one of the most joyous days in history.
May 8, 1945, the day that Nazi Germany surrendered unconditionally to the
Allied powers, ended World War II in Europe. For the soldiers, sailors, airmen and others of the Greatest Generation, V-E Day
(Victory in Europe Day) set off worldwide celebrations still remembered today.
Now V-E Day has come to Manistee. Organized by local veterans, the gathering is intended to give all area veterans, especially those who are retired the opportunity to gather and talk about
their various experiences. Though each program lasts about one hour, veterans
are encouraged to gather in small, informal groups afterward to continue with
their fellowship and play card games. The senior center provides free coffee and treats to the veterans. Veterans also are invited to arrive at noon to take advantage of the center’s low-cost, daily lunch program.
The Manistee County Council on Aging (senior center) serves as a warm,
welcoming place for veterans in the Manistee community. But by providing this
program, which began in March 2014, we hope to further honor veterans for
their service and serve them by setting aside time and space dedicated
particularly to them.
If you are a veteran, of any age, please consider attending. We would love
to see you here! If you know a veteran, please share this information with him or her.
